Pope Leo Promotes Another Nigerian Priest In Vatican.

Pope.

Pope Leo has elevated Monsignor Anthony Onyemuche Ekpo to the position of Assessor for General Affairs within the Vatican Secretariat of State.

Before this appointment, Msgr Ekpo served as undersecretary at the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development.

Ekpo, a priest from the Umuahia Diocese, was born in Umudike on 24 September 1981 and ordained on 30 July 2011.

This marks the second significant Vatican appointment given to a Nigerian this month. Earlier, Pope Leo assigned Fr Edward Daleng from Plateau State as Vice Regent of the Prefecture of the Pontifical Household, a role in which he will help coordinate the Pope’s non-liturgical duties and engagements.

Ekpo, who holds qualifications in systematic theology and canon law, joined the Holy See on 5 September 2016 as an official in the Section for General Affairs. He was later appointed undersecretary of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development on 18 April 2023.

His new position places him as the third-highest-ranking figure in the Section for General Affairs, following the Secretary of State and the Substitute for General Affairs.

In his capacity as Assessor, he will assist the Substitute in managing the Church’s daily administrative functions, including curial coordination, appointments, publication of official documents, diplomatic matters, and supervision of the papal seal and the Fisherman’s Ring.

The section also supports apostolic nuncios around the world in issues relating to their local churches.
