The Nigerian Senate has approved a new resolution declaring kidnapping a form of terrorism and urging amendments to the Terrorism Act so that the harshest punishment can be applied.
At Wednesday’s plenary, senators agreed that once the law is updated, anyone found guilty of kidnapping should automatically receive the death penalty.
Lawmakers said the decision comes as kidnapping cases continue to rise across the country, stressing the need for stronger deterrents.
The resolution stated that “upon conviction for kidnapping, the death penalty must be enforced.”
Senators added that the measure is designed to tackle the worsening trend and deliver a firm warning to criminal elements.
