President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has put forward Mahmood Yakubu, the immediate past Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC; a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri; former aviation minister, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode; along with 29 others, for ambassadorial appointments.

Also included are two allies of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, both formerly part of the dissolved G-5 governors: former Enugu State governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, and former Abia governor, Okezie Ikpeazu.

The President sent 32 names — covering both career and non-career categories — to the Senate for confirmation, just days after submitting the first set of three nominees.

In two different letters addressed to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, President Tinubu requested the swift confirmation of 15 career ambassadorial nominees and 17 non-career nominees.

The career category includes four women, while the non-career list features six.

Those nominated as non-career ambassadors include Barrister Ogbonnaya Kalu from Abia; Reno Omokri (Delta); former INEC chairman, Mahmood Yakubu; former Ekiti First Lady, Erelu Angela Adebayo; and ex-Enugu governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

Other names include Tasiu Musa Maigari, former Katsina House of Assembly Speaker; Yakubu N. Gambo, a former Commissioner in Plateau and former deputy executive secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission, UBEC.

Also nominated are Professor Nora Ladi Daduut, a former Plateau senator; Otunba Femi Pedro, a former Lagos deputy governor; Chief Femi Fani-Kayode from Osun; and Barrister Nkechi Linda Ufochukwu of Anambra.

The list continues with Fatima Florence Ajimobi, former Oyo First Lady; former Lagos Commissioner, Lola Akande; former Adamawa Senator, Grace Bent; former Abia governor, Victor Okezie Ikpeazu; Senator Jimoh Ibrahim from Ondo; and former Nigerian ambassador to the Holy See, Paul Oga Adikwu of Benue.

Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, stated that the new nominees will be deployed to countries with which Nigeria has significant diplomatic relations, including China, India, South Korea, Canada, Mexico, the UAE, Qatar, South Africa, and Kenya, as well as international missions such as the UN, UNESCO, and the African Union.

He added that the specific postings would be announced after Senate confirmation.

Last week, President Tinubu submitted three ambassadorial nominees for screening: Ambassador Ayodele Oke (Oyo), Ambassador Amin Mohammed Dalhatu (Jigawa), and Retired Colonel Lateef Kayode Are (Ogun). They are expected to be posted to the UK, USA, or France once cleared.

The President noted that additional nominees will be revealed in due course.
