President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed that Nigeria will not be intimidated by any foreign power, following warnings from former U.S. President Donald Trump about the alleged persecution of Christians in the country.
In a statement released on Friday through his verified X account, Tinubu addressed Trump’s recent remarks suggesting possible U.S. military intervention, asserting that Nigeria remains a sovereign nation capable of defending its people and upholding its security.
He stressed that the fight against terrorism has been ongoing for nearly two decades and assured Nigerians that his administration would not relent until peace is fully restored.
“We are indeed faced with terrorism — a challenge Nigeria has faced for almost two decades, and we will not back down. We will decisively defeat terrorism and claim victory in this battle. Security is non-negotiable, and we will never compromise on this principle. With unwavering courage and a steadfast commitment to the rule of law, we will prevail,” Tinubu said.
The President maintained that the country’s national security and unity remain top priorities under his administration, noting that no foreign threat will derail the government’s mission.
Tinubu also called on Nigeria’s international allies to continue supporting the nation’s efforts to strengthen internal security and sustain the progress already achieved.
His statement came days after Trump reportedly directed the U.S. Defence Department to prepare for possible military action in Nigeria if the government “continues to allow the killing of Christians.”
Trump had earlier categorised Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern,” citing what he described as ongoing religious violence and systematic attacks against Christians.
