The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party under Kabiru Turaki on Tuesday shifted its inaugural National Working Committee meeting after violent confrontations at the party’s Wadata Plaza headquarters disrupted activities and forced a pause.
Speaking to journalists after eventually entering the building, National Chairman Kabiru Turaki said the meeting — initially planned for Tuesday — will now be held on Wednesday, 19 November 2025. He blamed the disturbance on “actions of those undermining democracy and progress.”
Turaki applauded the Federal Capital Territory police for providing the security that allowed senior party leaders to gain access to the secretariat and address the press. He said he had earlier notified the police about social media flyers announcing separate NEC and Board of Trustees meetings allegedly convened by people he insisted were no longer recognised by the party.
“We were able to get into the secretariat because of the security provided,” Turaki said, offering thanks to the FCT commissioner of police for keeping his promise. He explained that the postponement was necessary to maintain order and allow the party leadership to regroup.
He was accompanied to Wadata Plaza by Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, along with other governors, national assembly members, former governors, ex-ministers, state chairmen and Board of Trustees members who he said turned out to show support.
Turaki maintained that the PDP remains dedicated to unity and internal stability, adding that the rescheduled session will focus on rebuilding harmony within the party as part of a broader plan to regain political influence.
The shift comes in the middle of a worsening internal dispute that has split the PDP into contending camps.
Turaki’s faction has asserted authority following the expulsion of former national secretary Samuel Anyanwu — a decision challenged by disgruntled members and one that contributed to the confrontations at the headquarters.
Security officials said tension flared at Wadata Plaza earlier on Tuesday when supporters from opposing groups clashed over entrance into the premises, prompting the police to intervene and restore calm.
