The United Kingdom has declined Nigeria’s request to allow former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu to serve the remainder of his prison term in Nigeria. Ekweremadu, 63, was convicted in 2023 for conspiring to exploit a man for a kidney transplant intended for his daughter at a private NHS hospital.
Ekweremadu’s wife, Beatrice, and co-conspirator Dr. Obinna Obeta were involved in trafficking a young man to London under false pretences. Prosecutors revealed the plan included a kidney transplant at the Royal Free Hospital, falsely claiming the victim was a consenting cousin receiving £80,000.
Following his conviction, Ekweremadu is serving a nine-year, eight-month sentence in a UK prison. Recently, a Nigerian delegation led by Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar engaged UK Ministry of Justice officials, seeking permission for Ekweremadu to complete his sentence in Nigeria.
However, according to The Guardian, a Ministry of Justice source confirmed the UK’s rejection of the transfer request. Concerns were raised over Nigeria’s inability to guarantee that Ekweremadu would continue his incarceration after deportation.
The source emphasised, “The UK will not tolerate modern slavery, and any offender will face the full force of UK law.”
As a result, Ekweremadu will remain incarcerated in the UK to serve out his full sentence.
