Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, has reaffirmed that the Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces will stand firmly behind any officer carrying out lawful assignments.
He made this known on Wednesday while responding to journalists’ questions during a ministerial press briefing on the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration at the National Defence College in Abuja.
His comments came following Tuesday’s clash between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and a naval officer, Lieutenant A. M. Yerima, over a disputed piece of land in Abuja allegedly linked to former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo (retd).
Badaru stated, “At the Ministry, and indeed within the Armed Forces, we will always protect our officers who are on lawful duty. We are already looking into the matter and will ensure that no harm comes to any officer performing legitimate responsibilities. Any officer carrying out his duties properly will be fully protected.”
The Defence Minister’s assurance comes amid growing reactions over the Abuja land dispute, which has stirred public discussions on respect for military personnel and their lawful roles in civil operations.
