Why School Kidnappings Keep Happening — NANS.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has held Nigeria’s failing internal security system responsible for the ongoing wave of school kidnappings.

NANS President Olushola Oladoja stated on Wednesday that despite large investments and repeated assurances from the government, the Safe School Initiative has largely been ineffective.

He expressed disappointment that for over ten years, the country has been caught in a relentless cycle of tragedies without justice, meaningful reform, or real protection for students in schools.

“Numerous schools have fallen victim to terrorist attacks due to poor coordination, intelligence failures, and complacent leadership,” Oladoja said.

He further criticised police leadership for contributing to a broad collapse in security, which has encouraged terrorists to repeatedly strike educational institutions.

Oladoja urged that Nigeria must stop accepting incompetence when lives and national stability are at stake.

Regarding the recent Kebbi school abduction, NANS raised concerns about possible internal betrayal, pointing out that the terrorists struck shortly after reported troop withdrawals.

He called on the National Security Adviser, Minister of Defence, Chief of Defence Staff, and service chiefs to establish a high-level panel to investigate potential insider involvement.

“The panel must look into security weaknesses, command failures, and the suspicious timing of troop withdrawals just before major attacks,” he added.
