Wike Vows Tough Sanctions Over Unauthorised Schools Closure.

Wike.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, has issued a stern warning to any officials involved in the unauthorised shutdown of schools in the FCT, stating they will face strict disciplinary measures under Civil Service regulations.

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday after inspecting infrastructure developments in the Guzape II District of Abuja, Wike expressed his shock and disappointment over the unapproved order issued by the FCTA Education Secretariat to close schools. The incident has already led to the indefinite suspension of the Mandate Secretary for Education, Danlami Hayyo.

Wike said he was taken aback when he saw a news ticker announcing the school closures and immediately contacted the Mandate Secretary, who failed to provide any explanation. He added that a circular had been sent out to schools without official consent.

The Minister emphasised that security agencies confirmed there was no credible threat justifying such a closure in the FCT, especially when neighbouring states like Kaduna, Nasarawa, and Kogi had kept their schools open.

He criticised the decision, saying it was unacceptable for such an action to be taken without informing the leadership of the FCT. Wike warned that those responsible would be held accountable and disciplined.

He dismissed any claims that the closure was a precautionary measure, stating that he would never make such a decision without briefing the President. Wike also noted that directors involved would face sanctions according to Civil Service laws.

Regarding the infrastructure projects in Guzape II District (Cadastral Zone A11), Wike reaffirmed his government’s commitment to completing ongoing projects aimed at expanding Abuja and supporting development.

He explained that many of the projects being executed were awarded before the current administration took office in 2023 but had been delayed due to funding challenges. Completing these projects is vital to allow plot owners to commence building works.

Wike also revealed that the Federal Executive Council has approved the resumption of stalled infrastructure development in Maitama II, which has prevented landowners from accessing their plots.

He assured residents that any existing buildings affected by the development would be compensated and relocated in line with FCTA policies.
