The De Renaissance Patriots Foundation, a Lagos socio-cultural group, has petitioned Senate President Godswill Akpabio to block the confirmation of two ambassadorial nominees listed as Lagos representatives, arguing they are not indigenes.
In a letter signed by the Foundation’s President, Mr Miftau Bolaji Are, and steering committee member Dr Lateef Onikoyi, they claimed the nominations violate principles of fairness, federal character, and constitutional balance.
The Foundation alleged that one nominee comes from Delta and Kwara states but was nominated for Lagos.
They stated, “Lagos is often the only state where ambassadorial and federal appointments meant for its natives go to non-indigenes, a recurring injustice.
“The recent ambassadorial picks worsened this trend. Mrs Lola Akande, nominated for Lagos, is actually from Delta and Kwara and is the First Lady’s sister.
“The other nominee, Femi Pedro, is from Ogun State and has publicly questioned the legitimacy of Lagos indigenes.
“This behavior is disrespectful to Lagos’ original inhabitants and violates the federal character principle. It threatens the constitutional rights of Lagos communities and sets a harmful precedent.
“This is a nationwide issue of fairness and justice.
“We call on the Senate to withhold approval of any nominee not a bona fide Lagos indigene.
“We ask for no special favours, only equal treatment afforded to other states.
“We trust the Senate’s commitment to justice and national unity and are ready to appear before relevant committees if needed.”
