The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has denied any connection to claims suggesting he was involved in the alleged misappropriation of ₦18.6 billion reportedly linked to the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC) headquarters building project.
The accusation was made by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), which implied that the Speaker ought to provide explanations over funds said to be tied to the NASC structure. In reaction, a statement released on Monday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Musa Abdullahi Krishi, described the allegation as “factually incorrect and misleading.”
The statement clarified further, saying: “For the avoidance of doubt, the Speaker wishes to state unequivocally that he has no involvement, directly or indirectly, in the award, processing, supervision, or payment of any contract within the National Assembly bureaucracy or any of its agencies.”
Krishi explained that all matters relating to contracts within the National Assembly system are handled exclusively by the administrative bureaucracy, which has designated leadership and procurement frameworks. He also noted that the NASC headquarters construction “was conceived, awarded, and contractually executed long before the emergence of the current leadership of the House.”
The Speaker’s media office appealed to SERAP, journalists, and members of the public to acknowledge and respect the clear institutional roles dividing administrative functions from political leadership within the National Assembly.
The statement reiterated that: “Attempts to link the Speaker or the House leadership to such matters are factually incorrect and misleading.”
It further urged for accuracy in reportage, asking civil society groups to avoid assigning responsibility for procurement activities or administrative decisions to office holders without proper verification.
