A close aide to former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (retd.), has refuted claims circulating online that the elder statesman has died.
Speaking in a statement issued on Sunday, the aide, Mr Adeyeye Ajayi, described the reports as completely false and misleading, urging Nigerians to disregard them.
He clarified that General Gowon is alive, in stable health, and remains actively involved in public and national engagements.
Ajayi explained that the former leader continues to attend events and contribute meaningfully to discussions focused on peacebuilding, unity, and national development.
He warned that the spread of unverified information fuels unnecessary panic and emotional distress among the public.
The aide further appealed to Nigerians to exercise caution and always confirm information from credible sources before sharing it.
