Benin Republic: Ex-President Son Arrested Amid Foiled Coup Attempt.

Security operatives in Benin Republic have arrested Chabi Yayi, the son of former president and opposition leader Thomas Boni Yayi, at his residence in the early hours of Sunday.

The arrest comes days after authorities foiled an alleged coup attempt in the country, although officials have yet to state the exact reason for his detention.

A senior figure within the Democrats Party, the main opposition platform led by Boni Yayi, said there was no confirmation that the arrest was connected to the events surrounding the failed takeover.

“We are not certain whether this arrest is linked to what happened last Sunday,” the party official told local media outlets.

Thomas Boni Yayi had earlier condemned the attempted coup in a video message released two days after the incident, distancing himself and his party from the plot.

Since the failed putsch on December 7, security agencies have arrested several individuals, including suspected conspirators, a former minister of defence, and leading opposition figure Candide Azannai.

Azannai was subsequently detained by the police on allegations of conspiracy against state authority and incitement to rebellion.

Beninese authorities have also issued an international arrest warrant for pan-African activist and outspoken anti-Western figure Kemi Seba.

Responding on Sunday, Seba released a video statement in which he dismissed the warrant, saying he had already taken steps to protect himself, though he declined to reveal his whereabouts.

In the seven-minute video, Seba maintained a defiant stance as political tension continues to rise in Benin following the foiled coup attempt.
