Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has stepped down from his role with immediate effect.

In a letter dated 1 December and addressed to President Bola Tinubu, Abubakar explained that he was resigning due to health-related reasons.

According to Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President (Information and Strategy), President Tinubu has accepted Abubakar's resignation and expressed appreciation for his service to the country.

It was noted that the President is expected to notify the Senate about Badaru’s replacement later in the week.

Badaru Abubakar, aged 63, previously served two terms as Governor of Jigawa State from 2015 to 2023. He was appointed as a minister by President Tinubu on 21 August 2023.

His departure comes at a time when President Tinubu has declared a national security emergency, with further details on the scope expected to be provided in due course.
