FG Trying To Destroy Multi-Party Democracy – Opposition Leaders.

A group of prominent opposition leaders has accused the Federal Government of deliberately weakening Nigeria’s democratic system through the alleged political use of anti-corruption agencies against opponents.

In a joint statement issued on Sunday, the opposition figures claimed that the administration of President Bola Tinubu has allegedly turned state institutions into instruments of intimidation, naming the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission as agencies being deployed under the pretence of fighting corruption.

The statement was jointly signed by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; former Senate President and African Democratic Congress National Chairman, Senator David Mark; former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi; former Edo State governor, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun; former PDP Deputy National Chairman (South), Chief Olabode George; and former Minister of State for Defence, Lawal Batagarawa.

According to the opposition leaders, Nigerians are increasingly observing what they described as a quiet but dangerous plan aimed at placing all state governments under the control of the ruling party, not through open and competitive elections, but by allegedly pressuring opposition governors through anti-corruption agencies until they defect.

They argued that the recent wave of defections by opposition governors has deepened public suspicion that political coercion, rather than conviction or persuasion, is driving the ongoing realignment.

The coalition further alleged that the approach extends beyond governors, claiming that influential opposition figures believed to be key players in emerging political alliances ahead of the 2027 general election are also being targeted.

“We must warn that this project, if allowed to continue unchecked, poses a grave danger to Nigeria’s democratic future,” the statement read.

The leaders cautioned that sustained political intimidation and the misuse of state power could seriously undermine the foundations of Nigeria’s multi-party democracy if not urgently addressed.
