A major fire incident on Saturday afternoon left several residential flats in ruins in Abuja’s prestigious Asokoro neighbourhood, with losses running into millions of naira.
The fire reportedly consumed four out of five blocks of three-bedroom apartments in a property linked to former Zamfara State governor, Senator Ahmed Yerima.
Witnesses said the fire originated from solar panels installed on the roof of the building at Nelson Mandela Street before spreading rapidly across the structure.
The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) confirmed that the emergency was reported around 1pm, prompting a swift response from rescue agencies.
According to the Head of FEMD’s Search and Rescue Team, Monday Addie, the affected flats were completely razed by the inferno.
He explained that valuable household items, including furniture, clothes, foodstuffs and other personal belongings, were destroyed in the blaze.
Addie added that the quick arrival of emergency personnel helped prevent casualties and stopped the fire from extending to other nearby buildings.
Responders from FEMD, the Federal Fire Service, the FCT Fire Service, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the FCT Police Command were mobilised to extinguish the fire and maintain security at the scene.
