Labour Party Sets Date For National Convention Ahead Of 2027.

The Labour Party, led by Senator Nenadi Usman, has officially announced February 28, 2026, as the date for its National Convention as part of early preparations for the 2027 general elections.

This was disclosed in a timetable dated November 17, 2025, and submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, which acknowledged receipt on November 21, 2025.

According to the schedule, the party has already commenced a nationwide membership revalidation and registration exercise, alongside a mass mobilisation campaign tagged Labour Party Connect 10 Million Nigerians. The exercise began on December 17, 2025, and will run until January 10, 2026.

The timetable further shows that ward congresses will take place on January 13, followed by Local Government Congresses on January 17. State Congresses are fixed for January 24, while Zonal Congresses will be held on January 31.

Addressing party members at the inauguration of the National Steering Committee for membership revalidation and new registrations in Abuja, the Interim National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, urged Nigerians to align with the Labour Party as it works to reposition Nigeria’s democratic space.

She said: “As we are all aware, our party, like many opposition political platforms in Nigeria, has, in recent times, passed through a period of intense challenges and distractions.

“I am pleased to state that the majority of these issues have been decisively resolved by the courts, while the few remaining matters are still before the judiciary. We remain confident that they, too will soon be conclusively settled in the interest of justice and democracy.

“As we prepare to enter the election season next year, the Labour Party considers it both necessary and strategic to reposition, reorganise, and strengthen itself for the bigger responsibilities and opportunities that lie ahead.

“It is in furtherance of this objective that we are formally launching this membership revalidation and registration exercise today.”

Usman explained that expanding and consolidating the party’s membership base has been a major priority since she assumed office, noting that internal challenges delayed the commencement of the exercise.

“However, with the launch today and the newly approved timetable, I am confident that we will not only recover lost ground but emerge stronger, more united, and better prepared for the task ahead,” she added.

She encouraged existing members to revalidate their membership and invited Nigerians of goodwill to “seize this opportunity to register and formally become members of the Labour Party.”

Reassuring Nigerians of the party’s direction, Usman stated that the Labour Party remains committed to providing a credible, people-oriented political alternative.

Meanwhile, the Interim National Secretary of the party, Senator Darlington Nwokocha, who administered the oath of office to members of the National Steering Committee, urged them to carry out their duties responsibly and without bias.

He disclosed that the party expects at least 10 million Nigerians to be fully registered by the end of the exercise.
