Political activist Omoyele Sowore has revealed that Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has gained celebrity status while detained at Sokoto Custodial Centre.
Speaking to reporters at the Abuja Federal High Court, Sowore stated that the Nigerian government will soon realise that sentencing Kanu to life imprisonment was a grave error.
He further claimed that Justice James Omotosho would eventually come to Kanu to seek forgiveness for the harsh sentence.
“Nnamdi Kanu is already a well-known figure in prison. They say he has been named the president of the prison, though I believe it was an honorary title out of respect,” Sowore said.
He predicted a reversal of the court’s decision, saying, “It won’t be long before they admit their huge mistake regarding Kanu.”
Sowore recalled warning that imprisoning Kanu would be the government’s biggest blunder. He added that those who were urged to protest Kanu’s imprisonment are now heading to Sokoto.
He also requested that Kanu’s family allow him to facilitate visits to the detained leader, saying, “I will tell you the day the judge who sentenced him goes to Sokoto to plead for forgiveness, much like Fela was begged for his actions—if it hasn’t happened already.”
Sowore explained that the government intended to humiliate Kanu by sending him to Sokoto, but instead, “he transformed Sokoto into a symbolic place of reverence.”
He criticised the government’s decision-making, stating, “They lacked wise counsel. You jailed Kanu, and now he has become a prison celebrity.”
