One Dies As Tanker Crashes Into Akpabio’s Convoy.

A tragic crash involving a petrol tanker and the convoy of Senate President Godswill Akpabio has resulted in the death of a police dispatch rider, identified as Ibrahim Hussaini.

Akpabio announced the development during Tuesday’s Senate plenary, where he expressed sadness over the officer’s passing and extended condolences to his family.

The incident occurred in Ibadan, Oyo State, shortly after the convoy picked up the Senate President from the airport. According to Akpabio, the tanker ran over the dispatch rider, leading to fatal head injuries.

He disclosed that Hussaini was buried earlier on Tuesday in Kogi State and is survived by two wives and four children. Akpabio added that he would personally support the family, including recommending two of the late officer’s older children for employment opportunities.

Dispatch riders, who are typically police personnel, provide motorcycle escort services for senior government officials during official movements.

Following Akpabio’s announcement, Senator Sunday Karimi of Kogi West raised a motion to formally notify the chamber of the loss. He described Hussaini as a Deputy Superintendent of Police who was due for retirement next year and had been part of Akpabio’s security team since 2023.

The Senate was also informed of another death — that of Ibrahim Tukur, a longtime driver attached to Senator Isah Jibrin of Kogi East, who reportedly passed away at home on Saturday after 25 years of service.

Senator Jibrin told colleagues that Tukur had worked with him since his early banking career at the defunct AfriBank and prayed for the repose of his soul.

The Senate subsequently observed a minute of silence in honour of both deceased officers.
