Less than 12 hours after Governor Ademola Adeleke left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the party’s Osun State Chairman, Sunday Bisi, announced the postponement of the governorship primary, the PDP has now confirmed that the primary election will take place on Tuesday, 2nd December.

On Monday, Bisi told select journalists that the suspension and counter-suspension of key national officials responsible for overseeing congresses, primaries, and submitting candidates’ names to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had created confusion in the process.

He also mentioned that due to the ongoing crisis within the PDP’s national leadership, Governor Adeleke may no longer wish to seek the party’s nomination for the 2026 Osun governorship election unless an INEC-recognised resolution is reached within the prescribed timeframe.

Shortly after, a resignation letter, reportedly signed by Governor Adeleke and dated 4 November 2025, surfaced online, citing the party’s national leadership turmoil as his reason for quitting.

Nonetheless, the PDP national secretariat, through its National Organising Secretary, Hon. Theophilus Shan, issued a letter dated 1 December 2025, affirming that the primary will proceed as scheduled on 2 December 2025.

The letter stated, “Following the earlier notice of 28 October 2025 regarding the gubernatorial primaries, and the successful completion of congresses to elect ad-hoc and national delegates in Osun State on 24 and 29 November 2025 respectively, the Party hereby reminds strategic stakeholders and the public that the gubernatorial primaries will hold on 2 December 2025 at Atlantis Multipurpose Hall, Ring Road, Osogbo, Osun State, from 10 a.m.”

It was also noted that the Electoral Committee for the Primary has been constituted and will oversee the conduct of the exercise accordingly.

The letter advised, “Candidates cleared for the primaries are expected to conduct themselves in accordance with the party’s constitution, and in the interest of law and order. Any acts of indiscipline will be dealt with severely.”

Meanwhile, a top security source revealed that the primary may not take place at the stated venue due to threats aimed at preventing the exercise, as the state leadership has taken a firm position.

“They have threatened both the owner and manager of the venue not to allow the primary to proceed. This may necessitate changing the venue, but we are managing the situation,” the source said.

Another insider within the party, who requested anonymity, stated, “The primary will proceed as scheduled, but the venue has been changed. Security will be ensured for all delegates.”

One of the primary organisers, known simply as Abiodun, said, “The state chapter of the PDP is threatening us, but we will not be intimidated. We are determined to hold the primary regardless of the threats.”

Efforts to reach State Chairman Sunday Bisi were unsuccessful, as his phone was unavailable at the time of reporting.
