The Presidency has appealed to Nigerians to assist in monitoring and reporting any breaches of President Bola Tinubu’s directive which ordered the withdrawal of police escorts from private individuals and VIPs.
This appeal was made by the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, Daniel Bwala, during an interview on TVC on Sunday.
He explained that public involvement would help enforce the policy more effectively, as the initiative aims to ensure that police officers are reassigned to essential security duties.
Bwala urged Nigerians to document any situation where police personnel are seen accompanying individuals who are no longer authorised to receive such protection.
He stated, “If you identify a celebrity, a private sector person, or any individual who has police against the executive order of the president, as much as you can, capture evidence, whether a photograph or video.”
He clarified that the directive does not eliminate police protection for all VIPs. He noted that some categories of government officials will still receive security support because of the sensitive nature of their roles.
He added, “The order of the president to withdraw police from VIPs is not all-encompassing. There are critical people in government who will still have one form of security or another.”
According to Bwala, in cases where protection remains necessary, security may be provided by other agencies such as the State Security Service or the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, rather than the police.
He explained, “It could be SSS, Civil Defence… but police have no business being with you.”
The presidential aide emphasised that the policy is part of the government’s broader plan to make better use of security personnel, minimise the misuse of police manpower, and improve public safety.
The federal government has, in recent months, intensified reforms within security institutions, with officials noting that a substantial number of officers currently assigned to VIP protection are required for frontline policing duties.
