Senate Moves To Drop One Ambassadorial Nominee.

The Nigerian Senate, under the leadership of Godswill Akpabio, is reportedly preparing to remove Reno Omokri’s name from the ambassadorial nominees’ list.

Omokri, who is a former presidential aide and a social media commentator, has encountered serious opposition because of his previous criticism of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, including a statement in which he once referred to the president as a “drug baron.”

According to Sahara Reporters, Akpabio had initially backed Omokri’s nomination, which was said to be a gesture of appreciation for political favours.

However, he is now reported to be supporting efforts by some senators to reject Omokri as a nominee, using his past remarks as the basis for disqualification.

Senator Osita Ngwu of Enugu West has been leading the resistance, reaching out to other members to argue that someone who publicly attacked a sitting president should not be appointed to represent Nigeria abroad.

The disagreement intensified when a Senate WhatsApp group, which is used for official communication, was briefly shut down, stopping lawmakers from responding.

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan demanded that the group be reopened and that all deleted comments be restored.

A source stated: “The senate president had nominated Omokri as a reward for the hatchet job he did for him.

“However, Akpabio is rallying some of his clique to screen Omokri out on the claim that he once attacked Tinubu and called him a drug baron.

“Senator Osita Ngwu, representing Enugu West Senatorial District, is reported to be rallying senators to reject Omokri.

“Ngwu has been attacking colleagues against the move.”

Omokri had previously sworn that he would never accept any appointment or work with President Bola Tinubu.

Before the 2023 presidential election, Omokri was one of Tinubu’s strongest critics, raising questions about his background, qualifications, and integrity.

However, he later softened his criticisms after confirming that Tinubu attended Chicago University.
