TikTok has halted the use of its late-night LIVE feature in Nigeria after a noticeable increase in livestreams containing explicit sexual material, including reports of users engaging in sexual acts in real time before large online audiences.
The decision was relayed to Nigerian users on Monday through an in-app notification. In the message, the company explained that it was carrying out a safety assessment to “ensure the platform remains safe and our community stays protected.” TikTok did not indicate when the restriction would be lifted.
At TikTok’s West Africa Safety Summit in Dakar, Senegal, internal data showed that the platform had been dealing with a sharp rise in the misuse of its LIVE feature within Nigeria.
The company revealed that in the second quarter of 2025, it issued warnings and removed monetisation from more than 2.3 million LIVE sessions, while over one million creators were penalised for breaking monetisation guidelines.
Within that period, Nigeria recorded 49,512 banned LIVE sessions, placing it among the countries with the highest enforcement numbers in the region.
Recently, late-night TikTok LIVE broadcasts in Nigeria became associated with explicit sexual behaviour. Some creators carried out erotic performances in exchange for virtual gifts, while others coordinated adult-themed shows designed to earn quick profits through TikTok’s gifting system.
The temporary suspension now blocks Nigerian users from hosting or watching LIVE streams during the hours most linked to the spread of sexual content.
TikTok stated that the action forms part of a wider safety review in the country, and noted that similar measures have been taken in other places where policy violations increased sharply.
For now, the company has not given any timeframe for when the nighttime LIVE feature will be restored, as its investigation is still ongoing.
