US Ambassador Explains Visa Restrictions On Nigerians.

The United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, has provided clarification on the recent visa restrictions affecting Nigerians, stressing that the measures are part of wider security requirements and not directed specifically at Nigerian citizens.

Mills made the clarification on Sunday in Abuja while briefing journalists during the visit of a United States Congressional Delegation, CODEL. He explained that the restrictions are meant to reinforce security procedures and ensure comprehensive screening of visa applicants.

“The presidential proclamation, effective January 1, 2026, affecting certain visa categories, is aimed at ensuring proper vetting and credible information in the visa process, not on penalising Nigerians,” Mills said.

He added that the proclamation clearly states the visa categories that could be affected and also outlines exemptions for certain groups, including holders of diplomatic and official passports, as well as persons travelling for religious reasons.

The ambassador urged visa applicants and members of the public to check the official website of the U.S. Embassy for detailed information on the proclamation, the affected visa categories, and the exemptions provided.

He also advised individuals with specific enquiries to use the embassy’s approved communication channels for proper guidance.

Also speaking at the briefing, U.S. Congressman and leader of the delegation, Bill Huizenga, said visa reviews and restrictions are normal practices aimed at encouraging cooperation and compliance, rather than punishing citizens.

Huizenga explained that such measures are largely focused on government systems and processes and are commonly applied in many countries around the world.
