US Senator Proposes Bill To Ban Dual Citizenship.

United States Senator Bernie Moreno has introduced the Exclusive Citizenship Act of 2025, a bill aimed at preventing US nationals from holding dual citizenship.

Currently, US citizens are permitted to hold multiple nationalities without forfeiting their original citizenship.

Moreno, who previously held Colombian citizenship but renounced it, argued that dual nationality causes “conflicts of interest and divided loyalties.”

He emphasised that citizenship should be regarded as “an honor and a privilege,” adding, “if you want to be an American, it’s all or nothing.”

“It was an honor to pledge an Oath of Allegiance to the United States of America and ONLY to the United States of America.

“America First and America Only. It’s time to end dual citizenship for good,” he declared on X.

If passed, the legislation would directly impact Nigerians among thousands of people who currently hold both US citizenship and another nationality.

US First Lady Melania Trump, who holds citizenship of both the United States and Slovenia, is also among those affected.

Data from the US Department of Homeland Security indicates that between 2021 and 2023, 38,890 Nigerians were naturalised as US citizens. During this period, Nigeria was the only African country ranked among the top 20 nations with the highest number of naturalised applicants.

While Nigerian law permits citizens by birth to retain multiple nationalities, Moreno’s bill would require Americans to choose one by renouncing any other citizenship to maintain their US status.

This move follows an executive order issued months earlier by President Donald Trump, which aims to restrict automatic citizenship for children born in the US to undocumented parents.

However, the order is currently on hold due to legal challenges citing protections under the 14th Amendment.
