Why Airfare Is Increasing — Aircraft Owners.

Dr Alex Nwuba, President of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association of Nigeria (AOPAN), has given reasons for the rising cost of airfares.

In an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday, Nwuba explained that the rise in airfare is driven by demand and serves to balance out the lower prices offered during off-peak periods.

He said this pattern occurs every year, with prices inevitably going up during peak seasons.

According to Nwuba, airfares are likely to decrease next year because the government has committed to reducing taxes and other charges.

“It is not a new phenomenon every year. Prices tend to increase around Christmas time due to economic factors at play,” he said.

He further stated, “The price increase is demand-driven and also compensates for the low fares during the low season. So, this happens every year. Prices go up.”

He concluded, “It’s unfortunate, but they are expected to fall next year following the government’s promise to cut taxes and charges.”

Earlier, the Nigerian Senate called on the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, and other key players in the sector for urgent talks amid public outcry over the sudden rise in domestic flight costs.
