Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has given reasons for his visit to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, who is currently serving a jail term in Sokoto.
The governor spoke on Friday at the Government House in Umuahia while hosting officials of the Abia Diaspora Commission and members of the state’s Global Medical Mission 2025 medical team. He made it clear that the visit was not motivated by political interests.
Otti’s explanation followed the circulation of a video on social media in which a man criticised him over the visit to the IPOB leader.
Responding to the criticism, the governor said his decision was informed by the need to encourage dialogue and promote peace, rather than any form of political calculation.
He explained that the comments in the viral video reflected personal opinions, which are part of a democratic process, stressing that opposing views do not automatically make one position superior to another.
The governor also addressed claims about his political future, stating that he has no plans to contest any election after completing his term in office.
“One of the issues he raised in the video was my ambition after serving as governor.
“I have said this before, sometime in October, when we received representatives of the President, and I will say it again today. By the time I complete my tenure as governor, I will retire from public office,” he said.
