After Onitsha, Soludo Bans Sit-At-Home In 12 More Anambra Markets (Full List).

The Anambra State government has directed traders in 12 additional markets to resume business on Mondays, warning that failure to comply could lead to temporary market closures.

This move follows the government’s earlier closure of Onitsha Main Market for a week after traders refused to open on Mondays, a situation the state said was affecting economic activity.

The markets included in the new directive are Ochanja Central Market, Bridgehead Market, Ogbaru Main Market, Building Materials Market Ogidi, Agba-Edo Auto Spare Parts Market Nnewi, New Auto and Motorcycle Spare Parts Market Nnewi, Fairly Used Motorcycle Spare Parts Market Nnewi, New Auto Spare Parts Market Nkpor, Nkpor Main Market, Old Mercedes Benz Spare Parts Dealers Market Nkpor, Old Motor Spare Parts Market Obosi, and Electrical Dealers International Market Obosi.

The circular, titled “Abolishment of Monday Sit-at-Home,” was issued by Chief Evarist Uba, Special Adviser to the Governor on Trade and Markets, and addressed to leaders of major markets under the Anambra State Markets Amalgamated Traders Association (ASMATA).

Market chairmen were asked to inform traders about the new directive and ensure full compliance.

Government teams will conduct inspections, and markets failing to open may face closure for a month, while individual shops that remain closed could be sealed, with owners facing legal action.

Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo has also scheduled a meeting with market leaders on Thursday, January 29, at the International Convention Centre in Awka to discuss the Monday sit-at-home policy and market operations.

The meeting will involve chairmen, secretaries, zonal leaders, and line chairpersons from across the state.

The government said the meeting was called at the request of market leaders seeking the reopening of Onitsha Main Market, not as a response to protests that occurred earlier this week.

Security will be increased during the meeting to ensure order.
