Deputy Governor Faces Impeachment Threat.

Political tension is rising in Kano State following the decision of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to leave the New Nigeria Peoples Party and prepare to register with the All Progressives Congress.

While the governor and many top officials are moving to the APC, his deputy, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has remained in the NNPP and continued to show loyalty to the leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

This stance has placed him under close watch as the political shift unfolds.

After the governor announced his decision on Friday, a wave of defections followed across the state.

Twenty-two lawmakers in the State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives and forty-four local government chairmen resigned from the NNPP and are expected to complete their registration with the APC.

Many members of the State Executive Council also pledged support for the governor and left the party, with only a few choosing to stay behind.

Some senior officials who remained with Kwankwaso include the deputy governor, the Head of Service Abdullahi Musa, and commissioners in charge of youth and sports, humanitarian affairs, and science and technology.

Sources close to the government revealed that lawmakers loyal to the governor are discussing the option of removing the deputy governor if he refuses to step down.

Earlier plans had focused on removing the governor and replacing him with his deputy, but the move failed after it became clear that most lawmakers had already declared support for Yusuf.

Attention has now turned to the possibility of impeaching Gwarzo once the defection process is completed, due to his refusal to follow the governor into the APC and his continued ties with Kwankwaso.

Attempts to reach the spokespersons of both the governor and the deputy governor for comments were not successful at the time of reporting.

Observers noted that although the commissioners who stayed with Kwankwaso still attend council meetings, they have stayed away from most public events organised by the governor.

Instead, they have been seen at political gatherings linked to Kwankwaso.

Sources said they were not removed from office but were keeping a low profile to avoid tension.
