The Chairman of Akoko-Edo Local Government Area in Edo State, Bliss Alabi Oshionogue, has been removed from office.
Reports gathered show that the impeachment was carried out by members of the local government legislative arm on Thursday.
Seven councillors were said to have signed the impeachment letter and moved quickly to Igarra, the council headquarters, where the decision was made official.
The action came only hours after lawmakers of the Edo State House of Assembly were unable to hold a peace meeting between the council chairman and the seven dissatisfied councillors.
In the letter issued by the lawmakers, Oshionogue was removed from his position as acting chairman with effect from January 28, 2026.
The councillors accused him of abusing his office, acting without regard for others, mismanaging council funds, engaging in anti-party actions, financial recklessness, forgery and repeated refusal to obey lawful authorities.
