Leaders of several Igbo town unions based in Northern Nigeria paid a visit over the weekend to the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, at the Sokoto Correctional Centre.
Kanu, who was convicted on November 20, 2025, and handed a life sentence over terrorism-related charges brought against him by the Federal Government, is currently serving his term at the Sokoto Prison.
The visiting delegation comprised former and serving executives of Igbo town unions across the North and was led by the First Vice President of the Igbo Association in Sokoto, Sir Charles Elobi, alongside the immediate past President of the Enugu indigenes association in Sokoto State, Onwa Okoro Clement.
A video released alongside a statement from the visit, issued by Okoro in Umuahia on Monday, showed about 50 members of the delegation pledging their continued support for Kanu after meeting with him.
During the visit, the Igbo town union leaders also resolved to work collectively towards securing the freedom of the pro-Biafra activist.
“Our visit today is to show that Nnamdi Kanu is our brother, and he has people behind him. We want the whole world to know that he has not been abandoned, we are with hi,m and we know he is innocent.
“This is not just a show of solidarity; this is also to pass a message that true sons and daughters of Igboland are with Nnamdi Kanu. He remains a leader.
“We will fight with one mind to ensure the release of our brother from detention. We are united in this quest,” Okoro said.
The visiting leaders criticised the posture of Igbo political office holders, accusing them of failing to fulfil their promise to work towards Kanu’s release.
They noted that since Kanu’s conviction and sentencing, only the Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, has visited him in custody. Otti also held a meeting with President Bola Tinubu following his visit to the detained IPOB leader.
The leaders recalled that after Kanu was sentenced by the Abuja Federal High Court presided over by Justice James Omotosho, several elected Igbo politicians publicly pledged to approach President Tinubu to seek his release.
Urging those political leaders to honour their commitment, Okoro warned that the public is closely monitoring their actions and inactions.
“At the end of the day, history will judge everyone. This is the time to stand up and be counted,” he added.
