A former Chairman of Okrika Local Government Area in Rivers State, Sir Igwe Achese, has alleged that forces outside the state are sponsoring what he described as a coup against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Achese made the allegation while reacting to moves by the Rivers State House of Assembly to impeach Governor Fubara and his deputy over claims of gross misconduct.
The impeachment process was reportedly initiated during an emergency plenary session of the Assembly on Thursday.
Describing the development as an attack not just on the governor but on the people of Rivers State, Achese insisted that the plot was being driven by external interests seeking to control the state’s leadership.
He said, “Somebody who is in PDP wants to assume or dictate who is the leader of the state. It is very unfortunate. Take it anywhere, the governor remains the leader of the state. He remains the Renewed Hope Ambassador in Rivers State.
“Impeachment plot against Governor Fubara by the Assembly members is a coup being sponsored by somebody from outside.
“I’m very confident that Mr. President will not take this for granted.”
The allegations add to growing political tension in Rivers State, as the impeachment move continues to generate strong reactions from political stakeholders and residents.
