The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced a sit-at-home across all five South-East states on Monday, February 2, 2026.
The group said the action is to support traders affected by the recent closure of Onitsha Main Market in Anambra State.
The shutdown follows an order by Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, who directed that the market remain closed for one week.
The state government explained that the closure was necessary because the weekly sit-at-home, observed since July 2021, has disrupted business activities in the area.
Governor Soludo had warned residents and traders not to follow any further sit-at-home orders, noting that such actions have hurt businesses and slowed the state’s development.
Some traders, however, said their decision to stay home was voluntary.
They explained that it was meant to show support for the detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, who is facing trial related to separatist activities.
IPOB criticized the Anambra government, calling the market closure unfair and a punishment for those showing solidarity.
The group announced that economic activities in the South-East, including Anambra, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, and Imo, would be shut down on the stated date.
The organization said the sit-at-home is voluntary and intended to protest actions against traders.
IPOB described the market closure as a threat to people’s livelihoods and warned that such measures could increase tension in the region.
Residents were urged to remain indoors on February 2 and avoid business activities, while IPOB called on its supporters to stay calm and peaceful.
The group also reiterated its demand for the release of Nnamdi Kanu and criticized the state government for pressuring traders through economic restrictions.
