A major in the Nigerian Army has been killed during a deadly attack carried out by fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province in Borno State.
The incident happened in Damasak, the headquarters of Mobbar Local Government Area, where the officer was in charge of the military base.
The army officer was leading a foot patrol made up of about 30 soldiers in the early hours of Friday when the team ran into an ambush.
The insurgents launched explosives and opened gunfire on the troops, throwing the patrol into chaos and forcing the soldiers to scatter in different directions.
After the attack, only eight soldiers were able to make their way back to the base. Twenty-two others were missing at first, including the commanding officer.
Reports later revealed confusion over the fate of the major.
Some early accounts suggested he may have been taken alive after calls made to his phone were reportedly answered by an unknown person.
However, a separate security source later clarified the situation, stating that the officer was not captured.
According to the account, the army major lost his life during the ambush carried out by the insurgents.
The attack adds to the growing security concerns in parts of northern Borno, where terrorist groups continue to target military formations and patrol teams.
