Kano Governor Resigns From NNPP.

Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has announced his resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party.

He said the decision was taken to protect the wider interest of the people and to avoid being trapped in the party’s long-running internal troubles.

The governor made this known in a letter sent to the party chairman of Diso–Chiranchi Ward in Gwale Local Government Area, dated January 23, 2026, and stated that his resignation will take effect from Sunday, January 25, 2026.

In the message shared through his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, Yusuf expressed appreciation to the party for giving him the chance to contest and serve.

He thanked the leaders and members of the party across Kano for their support since he joined in 2022 and for standing with him during his time in office.

Yusuf explained that repeated leadership disputes and court cases within the party had created serious problems at both the state and national levels.

He said these issues had weakened unity, widened gaps among members, and caused uncertainty in the party’s structure.

According to him, many members now feel left out, and the divisions have grown so deep that they may no longer be easy to fix.

He added that after thinking carefully about the situation, he concluded that leaving the party was the best step for the progress and peace of Kano State.

The governor said his action was taken calmly and without anger, adding that he still believes in unity, stability and development in the state.

His departure is not coming alone.

Twenty-one members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives and 44 local government chairmen are also leaving the party.

The party secretary in Diso–Chiranchi Ward, Kabiru Zubairu, confirmed receipt of the letter and praised the governor’s work in areas such as roads, city renewal, health care, schools and support for small businesses.

He admitted that the crisis in the party has been difficult to manage and said the party had no choice but to accept the governor’s decision.
