Former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has accused the Department of State Services of preventing his family members and legal team from visiting him after his recent arrest in Abuja.
Malami is currently facing trial alongside his wife and son over allegations linked to money laundering.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission earlier arraigned him before a federal high court, which ordered that he be kept at the Kuje Correctional Centre. On January 7, the court granted him bail in the sum of N500 million.
After completing his release process at the correctional centre on Monday, Malami was arrested again by operatives of the DSS at the entrance of the prison.
Reports later surfaced that security agents found arms in his residence, which led to the fresh arrest.
In a statement released on Wednesday, his media aide, Mohammed Doka, dismissed the reports about weapons discovery as false and without proof.
He said neither Malami’s family nor his lawyers had received any official notice about such a finding from any security agency.
Doka said Malami has been kept in isolation since his arrest and has not been allowed to meet his relatives, lawyers or close associates.
According to him, this situation has raised worries about Malami’s safety, health and basic rights, including his right to legal support and family contact.
The statement also denied any link between the former justice minister and terrorism or the funding of violent groups.
Doka said no names, transactions, dates or evidence had been presented to back such claims, describing the reports as careless and misleading.
He added that the continued detention and media reports have caused emotional pain and hardship for Malami’s family and staff.
The aide noted that Malami is a senior member of the African Democratic Congress and has declared interest in contesting the Kebbi State governorship election in 2027.
Based on this, Doka warned that political motives may now be creeping into the matter and called on authorities to keep the legal process free from political influence.
He urged that Malami be granted access to his lawyers and family while the case continues in court.
