Nigerians In US Secretly Return Home, Others Go Into Hiding.

Many Nigerians in the United States are quietly leaving the country or staying hidden as deportation efforts under President Donald Trump’s administration intensify.

Some have stopped going to work, while others rely on online businesses to earn a living, fearing immigration authorities.

Trump began a strict immigration policy shortly after taking office in January 2025, ordering immediate arrest and removal of people without legal status.

The policy has drawn criticism for its harsh treatment of immigrants.

Reports from the US indicate that some Nigerians are abandoning jobs and returning home secretly.

A Nigerian woman shared that the fear among immigrants has been overwhelming, especially after incidents where ICE agents caused deaths, including that of an intensive care nurse in Minneapolis.

Many Nigerians now avoid public spaces and work from home, selling goods or offering services online to stay safe.

Some families have relied on community support to cope with the situation.

The President of the Nigerian community in Maryland said that some immigrants prefer hiding to returning home, noting that the economic and security conditions in Nigeria remain difficult.

Many are cautious about speaking publicly due to fear of repercussions.

At the Nigerian Centre, staff have noticed a growing number of Nigerians exploring options about leaving the US.

Some are seeking advice on whether they can return if they leave, while others have been advised to remain temporarily, depending on the status of their visa or length of overstay.

While some Nigerians are self-deporting, exact numbers remain unclear.
