The New Nigeria Peoples Party has accused Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf of turning his back on the people who voted him into office and warned that such a move may cost him public support.
The party made this known on Friday, January 24, 2026, through its National Publicity Secretary, Oladipo Johnson, after reports that the governor had resigned from the NNPP.
Johnson said the decision showed a lack of loyalty and could expose Kano State to political forces that once slowed the state’s growth and blocked the hopes of its people.
He added that leaders who abandon trust for personal comfort rarely avoid public anger.
The party said Yusuf was elected because of his long record of service and his close ties with the Kwankwasiyya movement, but had now chosen a path that could damage both his image and the future of the state.
NNPP also rejected claims by the governor that the party was in deep crisis.
The party explained that it had recently held congresses from ward level to the national convention in December 2025 under the watch of the electoral body.
It also recalled that the party won two supplementary elections in August 2025, which it said proved that the party remained strong and united.
The party reminded the public of a similar event in the early 1980s when a former governor left his party with many lawmakers but later lost his re-election bid, while most of those who followed him failed to return to office.
NNPP said that episode should serve as a lesson to any politician thinking of abandoning party loyalty.
Despite its anger, the party urged its members and the people of Kano to remain peaceful and avoid trouble.
It called on those who voted for Yusuf and residents of the state to stay calm and not allow the issue to cause division.
The party said time would judge the governor’s action and maintained that the people of Kano would always stand with leaders who show honesty, loyalty, and respect for their trust.
