The Presidency on Wednesday rejected former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s comparison of the Bola Tinubu administration to past military governments, calling it a distortion of history.
The government described Atiku’s remarks as an alarming failure to understand the difference between democratic rule and military dictatorship.
The dispute followed Atiku’s statement at a book launch in Abuja, where he criticized the current administration as the worst in nearly 40 years of Nigeria’s political life.
Atiku claimed that the country under the All Progressives Congress-led government faces challenges greater than those under previous military regimes.
Responding on social media, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Communication, Sunday Dare, said Atiku’s description insults the memory of Nigerians who suffered under military rule.
Dare argued that Atiku, who once served as vice president, enjoys the freedoms of democracy and criticizes the government while facing no restrictions—a liberty that was impossible under military regimes.
Dare also noted that Atiku’s statements reflect a recurring pattern of post-election grievance, as the former vice president has repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction with democratic outcomes following his election losses.
The presidential aide described Atiku’s remarks as a personal struggle with relevance rather than a serious political critique.
At the same event, Atiku encouraged the formation of a political alternative to rescue the country, urging citizens to take responsibility for building a credible opposition.
He said many attendees were former supporters of the APC who were disappointed by its performance and now seek to unite under a new political movement.
The Presidency dismissed the criticism as exaggerated and misleading, stating that Atiku’s narrative fails when examined against the freedoms and rights enjoyed in today’s democratic Nigeria.
