State Slashes Traffic Offences From 35 To Four.

The Chairman of the Commercial Transport Regulatory Agency (CTRA) in Cross River State, Mr Efa Nyong, has announced that the number of traffic offences in the state has been reduced from 35 to just four.

Speaking in his office on Tuesday, Nyong explained that the decision was taken to ease the transportation business and reduce the burden on drivers as the state moves into 2026.

According to him, the agency will largely retain its existing policies while introducing targeted improvements aimed at enhancing driver welfare and promoting ease of doing business across the state.

Nyong also disclosed that commercial drivers aged 60 and above, as well as female commercial drivers, have been exempted from paying registration fees and operational levies throughout the state.

“Female commercial drivers are also granted free registration and allowed to operate without paying any regulatory fees.

“The offence reduction was necessitated by the prevailing economic realities faced by drivers and transport operators,” he said.

The CTRA chairman listed the four remaining offences as refusal to register a vehicle, refusal to purchase daily operational toll tickets, overloading, and failure to use seat belts.

He added that all other offences, including issues such as broken windscreens, have been scrapped in order to reduce harassment and ensure smoother transport operations within the metropolis.

According to Nyong, offenders found guilty of any of the four violations will pay fines ranging from ₦5,000 to ₦10,000, as clearly stated on the agency’s official enforcement chart.

He further revealed that the agency is in the final stages of introducing an insurance scheme designed to compensate the families of registered drivers in the event of death.
