Social media influencer and activist VeryDarkMan has accused popular singer Wizkid of showing disrespect to late Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti.
In a video shared online on Thursday, VeryDarkMan said Nigeria often fails to value its music legends.
He explained that while other countries honour their great artistes, Nigerians are quick to treat their pioneers as people whose time has passed.
He said many veteran musicians who speak about the country or the music industry are often abused or ignored instead of being respected.
His remarks came as the online disagreement between Wizkid and Seun Kuti continued to grow.
VeryDarkMan mentioned several old and respected musicians, including Eldee the Don, African China, Plantation Boiz, Psquare, Remedies, Tony Tetuila, Jazzman Olofin, 9ice, Vector, Sasha P, Asa, Weird MC, 2Face Idibia and Blackface.
He said these are people Nigerians should admire, yet they are often mocked and pushed aside.
He also criticised Wizkid’s recent remarks, saying they encouraged some fans to insult Fela Kuti.
According to him, arguments are normal, but Wizkid should have handled the matter with more care and respect.
VeryDarkMan spoke about the constant comparison between Wizkid and Fela, especially over Grammy awards.
He said Wizkid’s Grammy win does not place him above the late Afrobeat pioneer because the award was not based on his solo work.
Wizkid won a Grammy in 2021 as a featured artiste on Beyoncé’s song Brown Skin Girl, which won Best Music Video.
VeryDarkMan said the success of that song was mainly due to Beyoncé’s influence, not Wizkid alone.
He recalled that Beyoncé has shown deep respect for Fela Kuti over the years by performing his song Zombie and praising him in interviews.
He added that Zombie was admitted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2025 and that Fela is expected to receive a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award.
The activist then praised Burna Boy and Tems, saying their Grammy wins were earned through their own music and talent.
He mentioned Burna Boy’s award for Twice As Tall and Tems’ multiple Grammy wins as proof of personal effort and creativity.
VeryDarkMan also defended Fela over criticisms about his private life, especially his many marriages.
He asked why figures like King Solomon are still honoured despite similar stories, while Fela continues to face harsh judgment.
He concluded by saying Wizkid has not surpassed Fela Kuti or other members of the Kuti family such as Femi Kuti, Seun Kuti and Made Kuti in music or influence.
According to him, the Kuti family’s impact on African music and global culture remains far greater than that of many modern stars.
