The Federal Government has announced plans to use retired military personnel to secure areas of the country where government presence is weak.
The move aims to improve safety and encourage economic activities in these regions.
This development comes after the Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.), launched an 18-member committee tasked with reclaiming ungoverned spaces and improving the operations of the Nigerian Legion Corps of Commissionaires and Veterans.
The committee was inaugurated on Tuesday at the Ministry of Defence headquarters in Abuja, with the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Richard Pheelangwa, representing the minister.
According to Musa, bringing veterans into these areas will support ongoing military operations while also promoting development and security at the local level.
He described the initiative as a shift toward a broader approach that not only addresses immediate threats but also tackles the social and economic causes of insecurity.
The committee has three main goals.
First, it will work to integrate veterans into national development efforts.
Second, it will deploy them to secure ungoverned spaces and ensure these areas are monitored and developed.
Third, it will strengthen the Nigerian Legion Corps of Commissionaires, enhance operational efficiency, and support veterans’ reintegration into society while allowing them to contribute to national security.
Musa noted that involving veterans in security and development programs will help communities feel more connected to the state, improve local intelligence, and build trust between residents and authorities.
He encouraged committee members to present practical and forward-looking recommendations that can help secure these regions and support inclusive growth.
The committee includes representatives from the Joint Services Department, Nigerian Legion, Defence Headquarters, Defence Intelligence Agency, Nigerian Army, Navy, and Air Force, as well as the offices of the Defence Minister and the Minister of State for Defence.
