Former Vice President and presidential aspirant of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has reacted to his son Abba Abubakar’s decision to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as “entirely personal.”
Atiku, who contested the 2023 general election as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), made this known in a statement shared on his X handle, formerly known as Twitter.
He stressed his unwavering belief in democratic values, stating that he respects the freedom of association of his children in the same way he respects that of all Nigerians.
“The decision of my son, Abba Abubakar, to join the APC is entirely personal.
“In a democracy, such choices are neither unusual nor alarming, even when family and politics intersect,” Atiku said.
“As a democrat, I do not coerce my own children in matters of conscience, and I certainly will not coerce Nigerians.”
While recognising his son’s political decision, the former Vice President used the opportunity to restate his strong criticism of the ruling party.
He explained that his main concern remains the condition of the country rather than political differences within his family.
“What truly concerns me is the poor governance of the APC and the severe economic and social hardships it has imposed on our people,” he wrote.
Atiku reaffirmed his allegiance to the opposition, pledging to continue working towards unseating the ruling party.
“I remain resolute in working with like-minded patriots to restore good governance and offer Nigerians a credible alternative that brings relief, hope, and progress,” he concluded.
