Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has accused President Bola Tinubu of committing an offence that could lead to impeachment over the handling of federal funds.
The allegation was made during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme on Sunday, where El-Rufai said the presidency has been removing ₦100 billion every month from the federation account without approval from the National Assembly or state assemblies.
He said the deductions have continued for more than 15 months and have now reached about ₦1.5 trillion, adding that part of the money belongs to the states and should not be spent without their consent.
El-Rufai explained that the law requires both the National Assembly and state assemblies to approve any spending from the federation account, but this process was not followed.
According to him, taking and spending the money without approval breaks the constitution and qualifies as an offense that can lead to impeachment.
He questioned the use of the funds, asking where the ₦1.5 trillion has gone and what it has been used for.
He also linked the issue to the worsening security situation in the country, saying insecurity continues to grow even with such huge sums leaving the federation account.
El-Rufai added that communities are now being asked to protect themselves, which he said shows that the government is failing in its duty to provide safety for citizens.
He further said that if anyone had told him during the 2022 and 2023 election campaigns that the situation would become this bad, he would not have believed it.
As of the time of this report, the presidency has not issued an official response to El-Rufai’s accusations.
