The Rivers State Government has clarified that the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Elekahia, Port Harcourt, was not available for a political rally because it is under major reconstruction and not safe for public gatherings.
The government said claims that access was denied to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and his supporters are untrue.
The statement, issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Communications, Honour Sirawoo, described the reports as false and misleading.
Wike had earlier held his rally at Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, Rumuola, after stating that the state government blocked the use of the stadium.
The Minister accused officials of frustrating the event by denying entry to the venue.
However, the Commissioner for Sports and Attorney-General of the State, Professor Christopher Green, explained that no formal application for the stadium had been submitted to his office.
He added that the alternative site, the Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, is also state-owned and suitable for the rally.
The reconstruction engineer, Michael Ebitenye, noted that the stadium’s pitch contains sensitive underground pipes that could be damaged by heavy foot traffic.
He also pointed out safety issues in the VIP and spectator areas, saying the facility cannot be used until renovations are completed.
Green confirmed that the contractor, Monimichelle, advised against holding any events at the stadium, regardless of political affiliation, until work is finished.
