Asari‑Toru Local Government Area in Rivers State became the scene of chaos on Tuesday when councillors and the Local Government chairman were involved in a serious confrontation.
The disagreement was between the council boss, Hon. Onengiyeofori George and the head of the council’s legislative arm, Hon. Ibifiri.
At this stage, it was not clear what started the dispute, but people close to the situation said a strong argument between the two men quickly went beyond words into a physical struggle.
Some councillors reportedly sided with the legislative leader during the clash.
In video shared widely on social media, the chairman could be seen trying to escape from a group of councillors who appeared angry, while bystanders shouted in the background.
This latest event happened amid ongoing political strain in Rivers that has been showing for some time.
Tension in the state grew after a deep disagreement in 2023 between the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and his former ally, and now powerful political figure, Nyesom Wike.
That long‑running struggle over influence and control in the state’s politics has seen protests and legal fights in local government areas before, especially in places like Asari‑Toru where past council leaders have been at odds with state decisions about who should run the councils.
