The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office has sealed a public toilet located on Savage Street in Ebute Metta after discovering that untreated waste was being released into a public drainage channel.
Officials closed the facility on Wednesday after inspectors visited the site and confirmed that raw sewage was being directed into a nearby community drain.
The action followed complaints from residents who reported foul smells and visible waste flowing along the street.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made the development known on Thursday.
He said investigations showed that the operators of the toilet facility intentionally discharged untreated effluent into the drainage system serving the area.
According to him, such actions pose a danger to public health and the environment.
He explained that the release of untreated sewage into open drains can contaminate groundwater, spread diseases, and create unsafe living conditions for residents.
He added that the act amounts to a public nuisance and goes against environmental laws of the state.
The commissioner also stated that anyone found breaking wastewater disposal regulations would face legal action.
He called on residents and business operators across Lagos to ensure that their waste is properly managed and disposed of through approved systems.
He further noted that protecting the environment is a responsibility shared by both the government and the people.
He said authorities would step up monitoring activities in areas considered prone to environmental violations in order to prevent similar incidents.
