Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has warned that Nigeria is suffering serious setbacks because its education sector has been neglected for years, leaving many schools weak and poorly funded.
He spoke at the 94th Founders Day of Igbobi College, Lagos, where he delivered a lecture focused on building strong and lasting educational institutions in the country.
According to him, the foundation of leadership is laid early in life, long before people take up roles in government or public service.
Osinbajo explained that discipline and values learned during secondary school years play a major role in shaping responsible adults.
He recalled how strict routines and school rules during his student days helped build character, noting that the habits people rely on later in life are formed while they are still young.
He added that by the time a child reaches adulthood, their sense of right and wrong is already developed, which makes early education critical to national growth.
He stressed that fixing the education sector requires more than government effort alone.
The former vice president said private companies, alumni groups, and concerned individuals must support schools through long-term funding plans.
He pointed out that many respected institutions around the world survive on endowments that keep their standards and values alive for decades.
Using Igbobi College as an example, Osinbajo explained that the school was built through funds raised by missionaries and religious groups, creating an environment that shaped not just academic success but moral and civic responsibility.
He said the fees paid by students cover services, while endowments help protect quality education over time.
Reflecting on his years at Igbobi College between 1969 and 1975, Osinbajo recalled earning several academic and leadership awards, which he said were products of a well-structured school system.
He concluded by stating that investing in schools means investing in Nigeria’s future, adding that past national leaders did not emerge by chance but were trained in stable and well-supported institutions.
