The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has urged the Nigeria Labour Congress to change the date of its planned protest in Abuja over the ongoing strike by workers of the Federal Capital Development Authority.
The appeal was made ahead of the protest scheduled for Tuesday, February 3, 2026.
The police said intelligence reports show that some groups may take advantage of the gathering to cause trouble and disrupt public peace.
According to the police, there are concerns that members of the Shiite Islamic sect and other non-state actors are planning to infiltrate the protest and turn it violent.
Based on this, the command advised the labour body to move the protest to another time to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
The police explained that the request is meant to protect residents, ensure free movement, and allow people to go about their daily activities without fear.
They also stated that public safety remains a top priority, even while respecting the right of citizens to peaceful protest.
The command assured residents of Abuja that it remains committed to protecting lives and property and called on the public to continue working with security agencies to maintain peace across the city.
Meanwhile, the planned protest is a joint effort by the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress.
Both unions had announced a peaceful solidarity rally in support of the Joint Union Action Committee.
The rally is meant to back FCDA workers who are currently on an indefinite strike over unpaid salaries.
The workers, under JUAC, have remained off duty as talks over their demands continue.
