An 82-year-old man, Clement Nnamdi Okonjo, has been sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment following his conviction for f+rgery, ending a legal battle that lasted over three years.
Justice F. A. Olubanjo of the Federal High Court in Asaba, Delta State, delivered the judgment on Wednesday after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), through its Benin Zonal Directorate, successfully prosecuted the case.
Okonjo was arraigned on January 17, 2023, on a four-count charge bordering on f+rgery. He pleaded not guilty at the start of the trial, maintaining his innocence throughout the proceedings.
The case experienced prolonged hearings, with the elderly defendant appearing in court multiple times as the trial progressed.
In its ruling, the court held that the prosecution proved the charges beyond reasonable doubt, leading to his conviction and a 12-year prison sentence.
